Breast Implants
Two Types of Breast Implants
Breast Implants, There are two types of breast implants that women can choose from, the saline and silicon implants. Saline implants' casing are made of silicon and they are filled with sterile saline which is commonly known as saltwater. The silicon implants, on the other hand, are also made with silicon casing but they are filled with silicon gel.
Differences Between Saline and Silicon Implants
According to Cosmetic Surgeons and breast implant patients, silicon implants look and feel more natural than its saline counterpart. The silicon implants are not noticeable because they adhere to your natural breasts' contour while saline implants make up a room for its silicon casing's form.
When it comes to leakage, saline implants are outright noticeable through the naked eye when they leak as opposed to silicon implants which cannot be detected right away when leakage is imminent. The breasts will look deflated when a saline implant is leaking and the patient will be able to inform her doctor about it right away. Silicon implants, on the other hand, can take months and even years before the patient can notice the leakage.
Because of the silicon implants' inability to show leakage problem, they pose more health threats to the patient as compared to saline implants. When the silicon gel leaks and has not been attended to right away by your cosmetic surgeon, a scar tissue is likely to form inside your breast which, in the long run, will harden and take the form of cyst, tumor, or abnormal growth. Other patients with silicon leakage report that there's a foul odorous liquid coming out from their nipples after long years of no leakage visibility. Saline implant leakage doesn't pose a threat whatsoever since it is made of sterile saltwater which will be absorbed by the body tissues naturally.
The only difference in the surgical procedure for each of the implant types depend on the type of incision chosen by the patient. Larger incisions are needed when placing silicon implants since they are already filled with silicon gel prior to the surgical procedure. Whereas saline implants can be inserted using minimal-sized incisions since they are yet to be filled with sterile saline once they are placed correctly under the breasts or the chest muscles.
Breast Augmentation Placement and Average Recovery Time
The breast enhancement procedure can be done using different types of incisions but there are only two implant placements to choose from - on top or beneath the chest muscle area. Placing the implants on top of the chest muscles and just below the breast's glands is known as the sub-glandular placement while placing the implants partially or completely under the chest muscle area is known as the sub-muscular placement.
The recovery time for breast enhancement patients usually takes a week but when they have undergone the sub-muscular placement, their recovery time is longer depending on how deep their implants were placed. Women can return to their normal activities after a week but they are advised to avoid exercising for about six weeks after the surgery.
